Colette Winlock is not, however, new to HHREC. She has been the Project Director of the Black Women’s Media Project for several years and was actually one of the project’s founders back in 1997.

Under her leadership BWMP has created magazines, media campaigns, and an unprecedented series of self-care retreats for men and women in the African American community. She has also played a major role in coordinating and carrying out needs assessments, media campaigns, technical assistance, and community outreach as part of HHREC’s ongoing participation in mental health work at the county level.

The wonderful grocery store located in San Francisco (at the Corner of Folsom & Duboce) gives out tens of thousands of dollars every year to community non-profits and made this donation to BWMP towards the costs of its Be Still self-care and meditation retreats. Rainbow is also an incredible all-vegetarian food cooperative with some of the best local and organic produce, vitamins/minerals, bulk foods and baked goods in the Bay Area. If you shop there, please stop at the Customer Service desk and tell them thank you from the BWMP!

Here is a gallery of them compiled into one place.

As you’ll see, the event inspires a whole range of relaxation techniques, and a vibrant community. For every retreat we end up having a waiting list, the word of mouth is so strong about the power of this event. We also see a lot of new faces each time, meaning that it is reaching out to an ever broader community.

If you have photos from your experience, please send them to us! We’ll add them here.

Send to:
admin@hhrec.org
Or:
2288 Fulton St, Ste #103
Berkeley, CA 94704

See the Gallery HERE!

He is a powerful speaker with a clear voice and a clearer message: You have to be AWAKE to relax, and you have to be sitting still, doing nothing, just letting the breath flow through you and your thoughts come and go.

Dr Staggers specializes in addiction medicine, HIV medicine, and stress management. He is the Medical Director of the Berkeley Addiction Treatment Services Center. He is the former medical director of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics Drug Rehabilitation and Aftercare Program; and he is also the former director of the alcohol, drug, and methadone programs of the West Oakland Health Center.

Dr Staggers has been an investigator on multiple federal research grants, including research on the effects of the Transcendental Meditation program on cardiovascular disease.

For the ACA Symposium, Dr. Staggers brought his powerful ideas to a PowerPoint presentation form. He wanted to share that with you, so we are attaching it below for you to read and soak up.
